Holy Hannah
Walt had been noticing more cars disabled on the road than he thought they would be seeing. Evidently the great tourist migration when the grid went down coincided with the locals and retirees trying to share the hurricane evacuation routes with the rest of Florida trying to travel out of the state through these narrow corridors to other highways going Lord knows where.
Car license plates from states all over were mixed in with various separate Florida county tags. Yoshi remarked that many of them looked like they run out of gas waiting to take their turn at the pump at gas stations that probably got depleted in days. What happened to these stranded travelers? How long did they survive and how many people might still be left? Not many, that was for sure.
There are not many folks living these days who knew what to do when the municipal water supply shut off let alone had taken time to learn how to desalinate sea water into fresh.
Oh, sure there were many good fishermen and women in the small coastal tourist town that could catch their dinner, but under the current apocalyptic conditions this task became increasingly difficult. Not only were their no bait stores to get what they were used to using to catch fish but society was breaking down to the point that it just plain wasnât safe to go outside for a while.
Add to the mix of desperation, chaos and violence the emergence of a very odd doomsday cult that developed from one of the larger churches of the community as a response to the fears and beliefs of the followers thinking the biblical book of Revelation was upon them.
Whatever threatened the church and its followers was dealt with decisively in basically very non-Christian ways. At first the cult actually did some good for community. They organized their community and created a church food store to support the followers but as times got harder and food grew scarcer, they became more militant in their methodology of furthering their own survival.
They believed that it was their ordained mission in life to become âFishers of menâ but this obscure vision took on ominous and dangerous repercussions for those not a member of the believers. At first the beach survivors welcomed seeing these so called âguardiansâ on the beaches that enforced law and order so that small masses of people could take over a section of beach to fish in safety but they soon become dreaded their presence. The prophesizing and trying to get other fisherman who were not members of the cult to join with them was bad enough but it wasnât long until the church members began to shun the nonbelievers and not only didnât offer protection anymore but would threaten and bar outsiders from fishing certain stretches of beach. Those that didnât share their faith also were subject to being crowded out and having looted goods confiscated to the churches benefit.
This caused rival groups to spring up and
